Recovery image help

I've been stuck trying to get the Custom Recovery Image loaded onto my Droid 2 for about two hours today. I've tried everything I can think of.

I've tried this method:

Custom Recovery Image - Simple Noob Guide

As well as this method:

SPRecovery

Both ways have got me stuck in the same spot. When I go to input this line of code into Command Prompt and Android Terminal Emulator, it leaves me with an error reading the partition. Not sure why. I went and looked through my files with Astro and couldn't find a recovery folder, which the command is supposed to be putting the recovery.img file into.

Code:
/data/local/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.2b.img

Any ideas?

Well it did help me after I updated to 2.3 and had to reroot. I was able to do it without using my computer. But it still didn't help me figure out the custom recovery image so I can boot into recovery mode and make a nandroid back up so I have an image to fall back on in case I mess my phone up flashing ROMs and whatnot on it.

I have the root process down, it's just the custom recovery image process, I can't figure out.
