Receiving French Characters in Text

So, my girlfriend regularly sends me messages in French and ever since upgrading to the Droid X2 the other day, the messages arrive as gibberish. I'm new at this as the X2 is my first ever smart phone and I'm just curious if there's a way to fix this?

And on a side note, when I receive the tilde key in a message ("~") my droid marks that as a space rather than showing the key in the message. Is this just part of the coding or is there a way for the key to be switched to show up? May seem like a stupid question but, she uses it as part of a custom emoticon... xP
