Reading SMS quickly from locked phone

I recently switched from the iPhone to Android (Bionic) and am generally quite happy. However, one thing I find severely lacking is that I have to unlock my phone in order to read an incoming SMS message.

On the iPhone all I needed to do was turn the phone on.

On the android I need to:
- turn the phone on
- slide the unlock slider
- type in my password
- pull down on the notifications bar

This is a significantly worse user experience.

Am I missing something or is there a way to get to an incoming text message in a more efficient way?

use handcent sms

it pops up and what not with no unlock

While I understand its "worse" you do have a lock on the phone to prevent information from being easily transferred. You can use Handcent which has a screen wake and text box pop up.

Also, WidgetLocker (in market) will allow certain apps on the lockscreen to be viewable.
