Rate the Motorola Droid

So far I'm happy with the droid, much faster and better screen than my Iphone. The applications are as good so far. I'm holding on to my Iphone for the next 30 days (just in case I need to cancel the Droid if issues arrise). therefore I'm reserving my judgement then.
:icon_ banana:So far veeery goood DROID! GPS awasome. Sound better than Iphone. It blew my Iphone on side by side comparison. I was watching You Tube in HD quality.
what happened, did you keep or return?

It seems a decent smart phone, however, I'm disappointed in two features that mean a ton to me: The voice-dial/hands-free app really is a huge step back from the Palm Treo. Also, I lost the ability to wirelessly sync my MS Exchange calendar. E-mail and contacts wirelessly sync, but no calendar. I think it's still a bit buggy. Other than those items, I'd give this phone a 5.

While I mam very impressed with the phone, like anything else there is room for improvement, so I had to give it a 4! If the scale was 1-10 I would have given it a 9 though:)

i gave it a 5...but it's really a 4.5, battery is the one thing i would improve on. but i am streaming audio 2x a day for 2 hours on my commute...if i use my audio player for mp3s, it is fine, the streaming kills battery life...where's my 2000mah battery at?

I gave it a 3 and posted why somewhere else here as well....There are just a few really dumb and really easy things they could fix....

So I got myself a Motorola Doid and my Wife the HTC Droid Eris. Honestly believe the Eris is a better phone. Some things about the Motorola that are just stupid:
1) Cannot group contacts. I mean how stupid is that? Here is a super smart phone, supposedly, and I have to download some app to make contact lists and still jump through extra hoops to send group text and email? The Eris does this just fine.

2) When I open the Droid to use the keypad, it does not find words or correct mistakes automatically. Why use the stupid keypad? I coulda saved alot of weight if I just bought the Eris. The on screen keyboard works fine.

3) Droid has only 3 main screens where the Eris has 7.

Yeah I am just not seeing why I paid the extra money for a Motorola, especially after having a Razr, or should I say 4 Razrs, over the last few years

I'm not an expert yet. I intend to become one since I love the Droid so much.

Keep in mind the following.

I agree, the Droid physical keyboard is not the best. I too also use the touch screen. And there are others such as swype also to investigate.
The Droid only have three screens is moot as that will change with Android 2.1 in January.
I don't believe the Eris has the GPS and that is a substantial difference for me as I do use the Droid in the car for Google Navigation.

Just some diffs. I think when you get to know the Droid more you will agree that it has greater function and is worth the extra $.

Cheers

The best Verizon phone that I've owned and I've owned nearly all of the high end ones including some BBs..

I'm surprised this phone was cleared to be released on Verizon because it can do so damn much... but they really needed something like this.

It can be a little tough shopping for phones. the Moto DROID gets all the attention, but the Eris is probably better for lots of people in reality.

Huh? 2.1 in January??? Well, maybe an update to 2.0.1 but we'll see, and we'll see what improvements it makes. They need to make a rev to turn the a855 into a better phone! I'm pinning my hopes on the app developers to improve the contacts, calendars, memos and such.

Im coming to the Droid from a LG voyager. That was a great texting phone but thats where its strengths ended. The Droid is just friggin sweet

Camera

takes good day pictures but flash gives pictures a bluish tint and not very bright. other than that, i love this phone

...but it's very difficult to type on the keyboard, and the touchscreen .. forget it and you can't use a stylus or finger nails.

If you haven't found this yet, check out Swype for the Droid.

It is by far the easiest way to enter text into the Droid!

I just installed this Swype thing, but it says it can/will record my key strokes... Anyone know more about this?

It's for the purposes of 'teaching' itself to your moves. It will likely at some point be collected by the makers for purposes of refining the final program before release. For now I doubt it is because the package that we got is not an 'official' release and it not recognized (i.e. supported) by Swype, so they are not collecting any info about you.

As for the rating, I'm sorry but I will give it a 4 (4.5 if available) but to me a "5" is a "perfect" phone. And while the Droid is GREAT it is a LONGGGGGGGG way from being a perfect smartphone. There are still several major functions that are not included/supported and Google has a LONG way to go on the OS and the tie-in of all their services. While it is a great "toy" and a definite step in the right direction it fails in being any sort of business/productivity device. I know there are 'apps' available to aid these functions but they are less than functional and pricey. I'm hoping two more versions and will be close to a perfect phone.

I give it a "4" for these reasons.

1. The volume adjust button (black one on right side) seems like something on a $45 flip phone.

2. The physical keyboard is a nightmare to type with due to the buttons not being rasied at all. I'd do without the track pad for a larger keyboard with rasied keys.

3. I HATE accidently touching the search button (or any of the 4 for that matter) with the inside of my thumb or grazing it with my finger. It then proceeds to send me out of my text and to the option I accidently touched. I'd like actual physical buttons you have to press.

4. The on/off button. It's just not in a "natural" place. WHen you pick up the phone normally, it's almost inconvienant that you have to reach up there. Would have been better on the left side by the charge input.

5. Sending pics. It's just my phone but pic messeges take FOREVER to send. On occasion...HOURS.

That's about it. Most of it is personal opinion.
