Question about texting with symbols

Is there a way to disable the "backspace" whenever I input a symbol? For some reason, if I type out a text like "Wanna meet up @ Mike's for some Smash Brothers?" the @ symbol gets pushed back to the 'up' so it looks like 'up@' until I delete it and re-type it, and then it looks normal. It does the same for any symbol I type in except for commas, periods, question marks and exclamation marks -- quotes, @'s, dollar signs, etc. are all affected. It's a minor thing but it's a big hindrance if I'm texting in a rush.
