Question about email and viruses

With any of the applications that download emails to your phone, should one be worried about viruses? Or are the viruses made mainly to attack and infect windows so an email containing a virus won't affect a smartphone?

With android most of your spyware would come from suspicious apps from the market. If the app do not have at least a good number of comments and not have at least 3 stars I would not download it.
