I've rooted a1st gen ipod touch and liked it for about a year, than I wanted to restore it to factory. I'm getting to the end of wanting my DX so I wanted to root it to give me something else to do until my upgrade...my question can I restore to factory so I can give phone to my son to use?

Just as the link above points out, you absolutely can go back to factory stock. However, since you mention giving it to your son, keeping it rooted is not a bad thing. I don't know how old your son is but when I gave my droid x to my daughter, I left it rooted and running a custom Rom because of the extra things that come with it.

For example, the Rom I installed had built in security and data monitoring. So I could lock her out of anything that I didn't think she needed, out even just remove it. And the data monitor kept track of how much data she used and if she went over a specific amount, the phone would turn off data so she could not go over the monthly limit and it is all password protected.
