Play store app not opening and Google message pop ups??

So my husband and I are all the sudden both having problems with our Play Store opening. We click on it, it acts briefly like it's going to open, then...nothing. Rebooting and all that does not help. Also, we both periodicall get the following popping up on our screen:

"com.google.process.gapps has stopped working"

We're not stupid, but can't seem to figure this out. Help!!!

Are the phones rooted? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling play store?
