Pictures No Longer In Gallery

Somehow a majority of the pictures I've taken/downloaded have displayed from my gallery. When I looked at the memory card itself, they aren't appearing there either. I was told I may need to use a recovery program to see of my pictures can be retrieved. What do you guys think? Have you experienced this problem?

This same thing happened to me shortly after I got the X. The worst part was that I lost a video that was pretty important to me. I tried using recovery programs with little success. I got a few pictures back, but the videos were toast.
