OTA to FRG22D - lost 3G

I accepted the OTA update to FRG22D and lost 3G. I then did a reset via Settings --> Privacy --> Factory data reset. I activated phone, but 3G did not return. I experimented with Settings --> Wireless & networks --> Mobile networks. I enabled Data roaming and 3G did come up, until I rebooted phone.

I tried applying update.zip which was the original 70-ish MB 2.2 FRG1b (or whatever it was), but I got a update aborted message.

I called VZW Customer Service from the land line phone. They quickly moved me up to Level 2 when the power down and remove battery trick didn't work. I was told a switch in Salt Lake City was down. While the rep was on the phone, I called my wife with my wireless phone, and had her hang up so she could look for the "3G" icon and check internet connectivity. She called back saying all was well with her. I'm guessing it could be the IP address I was trying to access. I was assured the problem should be fixed by the end of the day.

Sure enough, I've got 3G again.
