Not sure where to ask this but looking at buying a used Android phone...

Looking to buy a used Android-powered phone for my wife. She's not a power-user but she needs something. i've never bought a used phone (other than refurbed through Verizon). How can I know if the phone I'm buying can be activated with no problem? What should I look out for?

I've never used it but many members in here have used Swappa and have had a good experience. You can also use Craigslist but I would meet at a VZ store and have them check the phone out before any money changes hands.
