Not smart at all

So i finally caught up with technology and got a smart phone. I plug my phone into my comp with the USB cord.....click on USB mass storage and my comp still doesn't recognize my phone. What am i doing wrong? Any answers are going to have to be really "dumbed down" if ya know what i mean. Thanks.
