Noob droid user

Hello I want to root my phone and overclock it. I don't want to mess things up when I do this. If I copy my entire sd card onto a usb flash drive, will this work as a back up/restore point? If anything goes wrong in the process?

I have searched the market place for the z4root and it tells me its not found. I downloaded z4root.1.3.0.apk. Which file on my droids sd card to put this into?

You can just put it on the root of the sd card or create a folder called APK's.
Use your file browser and browse to the file and install it.

I know i need the custom kernel I downloaded the folder Download_GNM_TURBO4.zip unzipped it. I don't know what to do next.

Put that zip file in the root of your sd card(without extraction), reboot to recovery, mount sd card, and select install zip from sd card
Pick the kernal you DL'ed and it will flash it.
If not,
Put the file on the root of your SD card
Rename the file "update.zip"
Boot into recovery
Allow update.zip

I got it thanks for all the help. Sorry to be such a pain in the ass. When you put boot into recovery I googled droid recovery and it told me how to factory reset my phone which is what I thought you meant. I downloaded rom manager and it worked.
