new Droid 2 r2d2 - Changing screen while texting

i just got my droid 2 and everytime i try to text or use the keypad for typing
it hit a certain letter and it takes me to a different screen. have no idea what is going on?

i will be typing a text and hit the next letter and it opens up an app or something.
