I just found this last night while looking for a way to groupchat. Its called Beluga Messenger. Allows group chat, you can send pictures or put them directly in the chat, and see on a map where the person youre talking to is (if they have location turned on). Its really worth checking out, I've been using it with no issues. Its made by 3 former google employees.
Edit:I forgot to mention that its cross platform. Right now its android and iOS, and they're working on blackberry. You can also talk to people through their website .
