Motorola Droid 2.1

Everyone needs to realize that the Droid is not going to be receiving the 2.1 OS anytime soon. Why? You ask? Because there needs to be a selling point for the nexus one when it hits Verizon.

The selling point is not so much of 2.1 for the N1, but the hardware. People have a choice whether they want a slide out physical qwerty keyboard or more of a slim-form factor without the physical keyboard. Also with the AMOLED screen or Droid's slightly higher-res screen. Between the Droid and Nexus One for Verizon is merely choice. Regardless of the N1, people will buy the Droid or the N1 regardless of 2.1. Just like people were still buying the HTC Eris despite it having 1.6 due to the form factor and all.

The sales don't reflect this. I would've picked the Eris if it ran and was able (inside hardware ) to run 2.0. A person that bought the Droid is not the same demographic that bought the Eris. This thread is a testament to that.

But this thread isn't the majority or speaks for the average consumer. In the end, people will generally want something that is more new and stylish because its the current trend. When the Nexus One is released, it will already be the selling point regardless if Droid will have 2.1 or not.

a)the Eris can run 2.+. Already been stated that it will be getting the update as well, as are the Hero variants. It's not underpowered to run 2.0, or 2.1 which it will more than likely be getting based on rom leaks.

b) Nexus isn't suppose to come to Verizon until March-ish, I can't see them waiting that long on a 2.1 push to the Droid.

c) The next Moto device, the Devour, is supposedly running 2.1 and in theory is coming out pretty soon.

My best guess from the Nexus update today is that they decided to hold off and just package that update in with the 2.1 one. No point in rolling out 2 updates so close together. That just makes it more expensive for Verizon in terms of bandwidth costs.

I just think its funny, it's been what 2-3 weeks now since the code for 2.1 was released? Already been stated we shall get it, we haven't been forgotten. No sense getting so angry and delusional that we will never get it over something so trivial.

People are looking for hidden motivations everywhere. But just use basic logic - the Nexus was the latest released phone and it was buggy.

Google decided to shaft Apple and throw in MultiTouch - if they had not done that perhaps the Nexus update would have been out a week or two ago.

The Droid will get 2.1 just after the Nexus which is getting it now.

As has been said Verizon will carry a ton of Android phones - they don't care which ones sell they make the money off the service contracts.

Also right now Verizon and Motorola's biggest seller is the Droid with 2M sold - of course we will be a major priority.

Stop being stupid or paranoid and just wait. With the Nexus announcement everything makes perfect sense.

Exactly. I was thinking the same thing last night. People on here though want to come up with ever reason under the sun as to why the Droid won't get the update though. Why? It's the "I want it NOW" attitude.

Christ people. Ever hear of patience? If the Sanjay says we're getting it, we'll get it. Don't get your panties in a bunch.... Relax. It'll happen.

+1+1+1

And they come up with all these things like "I dunno, I think they've forgotten about Droid." I mean it hasn't been 2 months since the last update and all you got to do is look around the internet or hey, maybe other threads in this forum to see that 2.1 and flash are both on their way. And just what is the urgent need for all of this, 2.0.1 doesn't suck it'a a great OS.

I want the update just as bad as you guys. Heck I want google maps 3.4 which my nexus got last night with the os update. The multitouch for the nexus is iPhone good. It makes the nexus a true iPhone killer now. Everything will work out.

Just gotta look at it from a business prospective the driod was a marketing masterpiece, verizon is not going to dump 2.1 on 2 million plus units until ALL THE BUGS ARE WORKED OUT period. They don't want another RIM STORM. The nexus one on the other hand they may or may not push as much as we think. Or they are doing a spring release in time for the new iPhone. All the bugs will be worked out of the hardware/software and a solid device that will give the smartphone world a new standard.

eh, i could live with some bugs... they'd release a fix later for them anyway. just push 2.1 out for god sakes. why can't we have one of the modders work for Moto / VZW, i feel like the fools they have working for them in the SW upgrade department are completely useless.

The new features they just came out with along with 2.1 is really exciting now. If they delayed pushing the update out to us while they added this it will all be worth it.

Who knows, maybe by the time they get it to us there will be other improvements.

There are hidden "motivations" all over this thread

I want it too but I when they do send it I want it right the first time.
What is this $hit about just send it to me a mod will fix it. WOW really?
And the vast majority of users do NOT want a mod to (fix) it. Most arnt in this forum and are not quite as tech savy as most here. If it comes out and is half a$$ed then verzion will have some huge backlash and this will not help the android market. 2.01 is fine for now 2.1 will get here take a pill Mr instant satisfaction I want it now.

The phones I was talking about were released the same day! We are the average consumer for the type of phone the Droid is. All Im saying is if the software was the same we might have seen different sales figures. The Nexus doesn't fit into this info because its not out yet and wasnt released the same day with the same software. My point in all of this is that software does come in to play based on two phones released the same day with different software. Verizon knew this thats why the phone is practically free. Phones(free, new, with new OS,...look at thier site) sell contracts not the other way around. Most people are not going to search for the new contract thats out, at our threads level anyway.

Are we really the average cons.

2.1? Meh....

I can't wait for 2.5!!! Let's start speculating why 2.5 or even 3.0 isn't out yet... *rolleyes*
Patience people. It's only a phone. I'd be willing to bet you could live without it entirely if forced... regardless of its firmware.
