Motorola Droid 2.1

as far as i know, even if you root you won't get flash

Agreed...I suspect official flash functionality is a ways off, but the nice thing about an open OS is that it wouldn't be very difficult for someone with the proper skills to port flash into our rooted OS's. I unfortunately am a hardware engineer with very little programing skills so I will still have to wait...not too long I hope.

I'm really getting sick of waiting! :-( I purchased the Droid with the understanding that we were going to get an update that improved the UI and possibly enable Flash...I'm starting to get deppressed. I guess I'm just going to have to Root...not looking forward to that :-(

Depressed for not getting something that was never promised to you? Guessing you were sad when you didn't get a pony for your sweet 16 too...

The new UI should be awesome... really looking forward to new, bug-free features!

And I bet you were the really jellous type when you were a kid...

Actually, I am always careful to do a lot of research before commiting myself to such a significant purchase. Some of the features in 2.1 were major selling points for me...not saying that they were deal breakers, just disappointed we have'nt been updated yet.

We are in agreement about the UI though. :)

Def, the whole Live wallpapers is pretty cool... though there are still FC issues with several of the nexus one stock wallpapers. I'm really hoping for an overhaul for the stock music player in the near future, a lot more thought and dev are needed.

If you really really cannot wait for some of 2.1 functionality, there is a way to load a home replacement without rooting:

Download Launcher2.apk from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way
instructions:

The above is a use-at-your-own-peril launcher, but provides the 3-D app browsing and 5 desktops. Happy hunting

Well, yes I am anxious for 2.1 and I am disappointed it is not out yet. But man, I am continuing to find new apps and figuring out how to do this differently with 2.01. For now, I am happy. The Droid is still new to me...

Don't get me wrong, if 2.1 came out today, I would be happy as a .... lets just say I'd be happy :)

I just wish Motorola/Verizon gave an update like Sprint did with their 2.1. This posting in that article "We're fans of companies who proactively reach out to their users and potential customers. It's nice to know what they're working on and how things are progressing. It's that silent, ivory tower approach that turns people off and has them assuming that complaints fall on deaf ears." The last part of the sentence I think most people can not stand for.

I can agree with that. I litte communication could do wonders for PR.

On the other hand, I'm sure they don't exist in their minds or their world, but reality is that 30000 members is nothing to sneeze at. And that's just the beginning as there are many ties to the media from that base.

Seems there are always secrets.... as knowledge is power... they don't want their enemies to have it, so we don't get it either.

Just from monitoring Motorola's twitter page, they are getting hounded with questions regarding 2.1 for the android phones, and they repeat the same response over and over. I even started to monitor @VerizonDroid on twitter to see if Verizon has been updating so far nothing.
I have a bet with my wife (she has the Eris), that her phone will get 2.1 before the Droid will.

This just came off the ANDROIDGUYS.COM regarding 2.1 for Sprint.

Android 2.1 Plans “Going Very Well” for Sprint

A member of the Sprint team took to their official message board to bring everyone up to speed in terms of their Android efforts. As you may know, the carrier plans to update both their Samsung Moment as well as their Hero handsets to Android 2.1 at some point in the first half of the year.
A while back we announced our plans to update our Android devices to 2.1 in the first half of 2010. I just wanted to follow up with a quick status. The 2.1 update is currently being tested and things are going very well so far. We’re still targeting the first half of 2010 and if things continue to go smoothly we should have the update well within that time frame. I’m sure there will be a lot of questions about procedures and more exact time-frames but for now I won’t be able to say much more. I just wanted you all to know that things are still on track. - tooner (Sprint Employee)

Thats an interesting concept...... that could mean they are purposely withholding it to increase sales of the other phones as they may figure most of the bulk of droid sales is over... I don't see it pushed in ads anymore.

They know the Droid with 2.1 would remove incentive for folks to buy the other phones........ just speculating here...

So you might lose that bet.
