Motorola Droid 2.1

Status
Not open for further replies.
Just got off the phone with a Motorola rep and he said there will not be any more updates to the Moto Droid because of a legal dispute between them and Google. They are expected to formally make a statement and give us more details early next week. Sorry guys.

and yet Motorola continues to make Android phones.....whatever...

I just got off the phone with Moto and I told them that I a droid and am a member of these forums (becuase we all know how much that makes a difference).

They told me "who the F are you?!" and hung up on me.

BHDave10 may be on to something... DON'T KILL THE MESSENGER! I am a long time fan and reader of this forum, although I never make any posts (mostly because I have nothing interesting or useful to add). However, upon seeing BHDave10's recent post, I did some investigation myself by calling Motorola. To my surprise I recieved a similar answer. They did not claim the dispute between them and Google. Instead, they claimed that the Droid will not receive any more updates because of "Technical Problems". I asked if there was a problem with the hardware or software with the Droid phone and they said that there is nothing wrong with the phone and could not comment more on the issue. My conclusion is that there is truly a dispute between Motorola and Google and a 2.1 update is not looking good (should have bought the Droid Eris or waited for the Nexus One...). Either way, I hope you found this information useful and once again please do not shoot the messenger! I have been a Droid user since November and did not expect my phone to do what it does when I first purchased it. Guess I should have listened to the Droid Does commercials; however, when it come to 2.1 apparently Droid Doesn't!

from previous experience with Verizon & BB Storm, I'd be willing to bet that any delay in Droid getting the 2.1 update is a result of Verizon, not Motorola or Google....VZW tests the crap out of any new builds before giving the okay for release on their system....

He said, she said

I get that we all want to know if/when a 2.1 update will happen, but don't think bombarding moto/vzw customer service with calls is a good source of information. I work within a large software vendor and very rarely is our customer service department notified of any updates or bug fixes within development until testing is completed and end-product is ready for market.

This makes sense for all the conflicting information, though I keep reading this thread with the hope someone will provide a link to actual information (to their credit the mods are excellent at documenting/sourcing info). Anything in writing from moto is along the lines of "doing our best and as soon as we have any news, we'll share it with you".

I heard the next update will harness sunspots to make toast...

At least we all moved on...
the first 110 pages were expected release dates, the next 110 pages will be about just getting off the phone with moto.

Progress= achieved.

UGGGGGGGGHHHHHH I too had a Storm. I was so damn excited for OS 5.0 to come out that when it was released I stayed up until 2AM updating my wife and I's phones only to be severely disappointed with a phone that sucked. I went through 6 replacement Storms in 2 months because none of them worked with 5.0 and finally on December 9th I converted to Droid-ism. Hopefully when we do get 2.1 it doesn't eff up our phones like 5.0 did to the Storm.

And please do not mention a POS like the BB Storm in a droid forum again. I feel like we're somehow pissing off the Droid gods.

Verizon's testing process is more strict that others. With the Storm, they would get a "release candidate" and VZW would test it and return it with "fix this, or this is wrong". And the device maker would make changes, or not.

I think Google is more thorough with their releases too. It's really only a matter of time.

Plus, I've gone through the "waiting for a release/leak" already with my Storm. So this is a cakewalk. I've got enough to play around with to pass the time. 2.1... 2.0.1 with 2.1 programs.... themes.... apps... overclocking...

The Storm didn't have ANY of this so all we had to do was speculate and complain.

Android Central has an update:

One of the biggest (and best) questions you all asked after Google brought multitouch to the Nexus One this week was "What about the Motorola Droid? Will it get multitouch, too? Of course, the Droid has multitouch outside the U.S., and you can hack it on to your phone if you have the American version. But we're talking about an official, sanctioned update here. Following are the responses we got from Google and from Motorola:
Says Motorola:
While designing DROID, and all Motorola mobile devices, Motorola work very closely with carriers and partners to deliver differentiated consumer experiences, depending on the region, carrier preferences and consumer needs. DROID features double tap zoom, a new way to zoom in on content. For example, when viewing web pages, simply tap twice on the content you want to view and DROID automatically zooms in and fits the content to the width of the display. You can also zoom in and out with on screen zoom controls.
Says Google:
The Android 2.0 framework includes support for multi-touch. As with other Android platform technologies, such as the text-to-speech engine, operators and handset makers can choose to implement this technology. Regarding the specific pinch-to-zoom functionality included in this new update, once we make this software update (2.1-update1) available to operators and handset makers, they can update their Android-powered devices accordingly.
So, if manufacturers and carriers choose to use it, they can. Same old story. (Let's hope they do.) We also asked Google about enabling multitouch on the keyboard. The big G's response:
The Android 2.0 framework includes support for multi-touch. As with other Android platform technologies, such as the text-to-speech engine, operators and handset makers can choose to implement this technology. Today's update for Nexus One devices only incorporates pinch-to-zoom functionality.
So there you go. Maybe we'll see it later, maybe we won't. Feel free to vent in the comments.

I will be very disappointed if Moto doesn't update the Droid to 2.1.1 within the next month. If they don't I may consider selling the Droid and getting the Nexus as I don't want a device that gets few updates and isn't supported as much as other devices. I like the Droid a lot, but don't use the keyboard and was under the impression that it would be updated regularly and in a timely manner. I hope I'm not wrong.

Things are getting very interesting. If you don't check the app section much (I don't either,) sholes.info has an app in the market now that does the the heavy lifting of rooting and romming for you. Donate version out now, free version to come later.

After seeing all "the bad" in post 716 it makes me realize the cake aint done till its done.......

If 2.1 is running on other phones why not the droid?... well when they are having this many issues still..... humm

I would rather wait if things aren't right, if they really have it stable for the Droid and are just withholding it, that not so good.

So what are people most looking forward to in 2.1? Seriously, I am using 2.1 currently on my Droid and it is only a .1 update. It is mainly cosmetic changes and any new apps have already been ported to the 2.01. The only thing I can think of not working on the droid is the nexus wallpaper.

I personally hope they are watching this thread reading all the speculations. Its gonna be so funny if we are waiting this long for something like contacts to be fixed and everyone thinks that multitouch or something else is the reason.

If this phone does get an update this will be the first phone i have had that has received an update. So im not really counting on much here.
