BHDave10 may be on to something... DON'T KILL THE MESSENGER! I am a long time fan and reader of this forum, although I never make any posts (mostly because I have nothing interesting or useful to add). However, upon seeing BHDave10's recent post, I did some investigation myself by calling Motorola. To my surprise I recieved a similar answer. They did not claim the dispute between them and Google. Instead, they claimed that the Droid will not receive any more updates because of "Technical Problems". I asked if there was a problem with the hardware or software with the Droid phone and they said that there is nothing wrong with the phone and could not comment more on the issue. My conclusion is that there is truly a dispute between Motorola and Google and a 2.1 update is not looking good (should have bought the Droid Eris or waited for the Nexus One...). Either way, I hope you found this information useful and once again please do not shoot the messenger! I have been a Droid user since November and did not expect my phone to do what it does when I first purchased it. Guess I should have listened to the Droid Does commercials; however, when it come to 2.1 apparently Droid Doesn't!

Since Google released the source code for 2.1 (by the GPL they have to, except for the closed source apps) and anyone could take the source code and do what ever they want with the code. So in a sense, Motorola could still release 2.1 for the Droids and Google has to sit there. Now, getting around the closed source apps, just do like CM did, do a backup first, then install the update the do a restore to get the google apps back.
