Like I said before:
Late spring, early summer, at the earliest. When the Nexus One issued are largely settler, and sales increase, we will get 2.1....
Bank it.
Doubt it. You're basing that on...nothing. There was a target date of Jan 22nd until problems popped up and delayed things.
I am basing it on information I have read, things I have heard, rumor, innuendo, suggestion, and theory.... Pretty much what everyone else was basing the 1/22 release date on.
A linked article on the Operation Android site suggests that the release of 2.1 was delayed by the problems with the Nexus One. Yes, it's rumor, but, it makes sense.
I am not trying to be negative, or a naysayer. I am sure 2.1 is coming, in fact, earlier this month Motorola said that the Droid, and, I believe, the Cliq are getting it. So, that has been established. If they start pushing the update tomorrow, I'll gladly admit that my suppositions were wrong. I am just being realistic, and applying common sense.
After thinking about this some more, I wouldn't be surprised if the 2.1 release coincides with the Nexus One debut with Verizon (I have read that Verizon gets the N1 in March) Google is heavily invested in the N1, in fact, I have read in a few places that by designing the phone, Google is now in the cell phone markt, competing directly with Motorola for market share. The N1 is having issues, some of them having to do with 3G connectivity, and sales are less than expected for that device. Moving 2.1 to a "competitors" device would drive sales away from the N1 and to the Droid, Eris, and Cliq. Why? Because, as I have stated before, those devices have a high customer satisfaction rate, they are stable, and they are popular. Now, if 2.1 is pushed to an already stable device, with the same features as the N1, then it would stand to reason that sales would accrue to what works, would they not?
Lets, look at it this way: Lets say Microsoft wants to get into the PC market, and they design a computer that is optimized for Windows 7, okay? Lets say, for the fun of it, that they designed everything down to the motherboard, every component in the computer is designed to run on Windows 7 with few problems. Let's say they get an electronics firm to manufacture all of the components, but Microsoft oversees everything from method, to quality control. They start marketing their new computers as an easy to afford, good performing, middle of the road "family PC" a computer that will appeal to those who like to surf, post photos, make videos, music, and play the occasional game. Microsoft, who supplies the OS to every other manufacturer in the PC market (besides Apple, obviously), is now in competition with them by designing this new PC. Let's say that Windows 7 has some issues, and sales of the new Microsoft PC's is slow, it's not bad, but it's not the numbers they want. Consumers of other PC's are having some of the same problems, but not to the level that MS's new computer line is having. So, the MS programmers come out with Windows 7.5 which will take care of the bugs, and add some new features that everyone wants. Now, remember, MS has invested millions in the design, manufacture, and launch of their new PC line. Their new OS updates will improve the performance of the computers that they have produced, but it will also improve the performance of their competitors systems as well... Since MS is going to want their sales, and market share to increase, they will take care of their investment first. It's business sense, because no company that invests millions in developing a product of their own, to compete in a marketplace is not going to serve the competition first. Motorola is Google's competition now.
I am not saying 2.1 is not going to be released to the Droid, Motorola says it is...Google says it is too... that's not the issue. The issue is Google making sure their investment is going to make money for them. That is my theory on why I think 2.1 is delayed. Not stopped, or taken away, just delayed.
It would also make sense for them to release 2.1 to the Droid when the N1 joins VZW's line up, because one of the 3G issues with the N1 at T-Mobile has to do with T-Mobiles limited 3G network Once 2.1 is stable on the N1, and being sold on a larger 3G network, then updating the Droid, Eris and Cliq would not be as threatening to the N1's sales.
Does this make sense to anyone? Disagree with me if you want, that's fine... I am putting this forth merely as something to think about and discuss other than all of the "where's 2.1?" posts. If it doesn't make sense, or you think I am wrong, go ahead and say so..... doesn't bother me...
