Motorola Droid's next update to be Android 2.1, includes multitouch browser

We've just gotten the inside line on the next Droid update that's making the rounds through Verizon's testing department from one of our trusted sources, and overall, it looks like this should take users 95 percent of the way to curing pangs of Nexus One envy. Here's what we've got:
  • It's based on Android 2.1. The build currently being circulated is identified as 2.1 version 1, mirroring the update just pushed to the Nexus One last week.
  • Google Goggles is now pre-installed (no matter how unhelpful it may be).
  • The browser's now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. Huzzah! No Flash, but then again, we weren't really expecting that.
  • Interestingly, the home screen's still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn't adopt the Nexus One's rotating 3D grid of app icons -- it's still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
  • No active wallpapers. Bummer!
  • The news and weather widgets introduced on the Nexus One are included. Maybe certain capabilities of 2.1 are going to be restricted to devices with minimum performance benchmarks?
There's no word on timing, and for all our source knows, this build could still very well fail testing -- goodness knows it's happened with plenty of pre-production firmwares in Verizon's past. We'll keep our ear to the ground and you do the same.

:mad:shoot, I'm bummed. I wanted 5 screens more than anything else. next to that I wanted voice to text in all text boxes, next to that I wanted the fly in icons where the drawer is now. didn't really care about the active wallpapers or the pinch zoom.
On top of that my dam water heater just broke, and it's leaking water all over the garage. this started off as a really good day.:mad:

Boo! Boo! No Flash! No Live Wallpapers! No 3D App Drawer!

Guess Im glad im using SholesModUpdater. Stock browser = crap anyway, so ill keep xScope.

It isn't a big deal. It is, however, the only thing I know of from 2.1 that we don't already have through the genius of the sholes team and others.

It will probably grow old soon, but that isn't the point.

Why would they not give it to us? That is the point.

I could see some potential for customizing the live wallpapers just as we do everything else in the OS.

No live wallpapers? You have to be kidding me.
I can seeing being bummed for it not having everything the Nexus 2.1 has but at the sametime I just don't see what the big deal with live wallpaper is... I like using my own pics and hardly ever use the factory wallpaper..

Where does it say in there that it doesn't have 5 screens? All it says is that it has the same pull up app drawer. Could still have 5 screens.

I'm kind of glad they will not be including the Nexus 1 launcher. I like our app drawer and the simple way it functions better.

I am running Bugless Beast and it is using the normal app drawer with 5 screens!

It also doesn't say it won't have the text to speech native in the system. I hope it does. Using that through the message and email program would be nice. I know third party apps do, but having it built in would be a plus.

Live wallpapers? nah... that would just kill the battery life. Nexus one can get away with it because it has an OLED screen and no slide out keyboard to power.

I am glad to see pinch and zoom in the browser, because the nexus one's browser is about as smooth as the iPhone's. So this would speed it up quite a bit.

I honestly could care less if we get live wallpapers or the 3D app drawer. If they're gonna end up slowing down my phone, then I don't want them.
