Moto Droid 1 Slow and battery dying fast

I have 2 Moto Droids bought on the same day. Recently (past 4-5 weeks) they have both been very slow to show home screen when unlocking or after coming out of photo gallery and some apps as well. Roughly 25-30 seconds. I can not do anything with the phone. It seems that this happened after the most recent update (2.2 I think).

Also the batter life has dropped dramatically in this time as well.

I removed all my pictures and video which wasn't that much to begin with and that did nothing to improve it.

How can I get the phone to function as it did when I bought it and the battery to stop dying so quickly?

Thanks,
Jeff

Root it, then clear cache. Also buy an extended battery. Did wonders for me

Do a Factory Data Reset out of the privacy section of your Droid's settings.

Do not install any task killers or virus protection.

Sometimes after an install things get a little messed up. This will clear everything out and your Droid will run like new.

Do I need to back anything up? Is there an easy way to save the apps I have so I don't have to spend hours upon hours trying to remember what I had?
