messaging problem, no notifications

it isn't all the time, but right now i have to run 2 messaging programs (handcent and chomp) to be able to always get notified of a text. if i run just one or the other, every once in a while no notification will show up, but the etext is in my inbox. it doesn't matter which rom i try it on, or if i have wiped and factory resetted, this always happens. is this a problem for anybody else? its frustrating, but not frustrating enough to get a new phone out of, because then i would have to get root for 2.1

I haven't had this problem with handcent but I do have a similiar issue with google talk. Sometimes the notification won't go off until I wake the phone up even though the message came across earlier.
