Messaging app slow to load.

I am trying to figure out the best way to keep the Messaging app from slowing down or freezing when it is launched. It is happening all too often. I delete all video/photo messages to attempt to minimize load times, but I am not sure it makes a difference.
I had to leave my home replacement programs as well because the home screens had similar difficulties loading. And with the recent android software upgrade I expected to see additional STOCK home screens but still only have 3 on my unadultered/non-rooted droid.

Your advice is appreciated.

Could be too many apps? Too much on your phone in general? Not usually the case with SSD / Memory cards, but I guess it'd not hurt to empty stuff off. I have 1.5gig left on the 16gb card and I have no problems...

Its a new droid x with only a few apps installed.
