Macro camera setting- any success?

I have a hard enough time with the DX's camera, I feel like it's probably the weakest feature of the phone. At least I can occasionally get a usable photo if the light is perfect. However, the "macro" function never has produced anything vaguely in focus or magnified for me. Has anyone been able to use this feature successfully? If so, what's the secret?
