So I've had an S5 for about 6 months now and something strange has started happening.

When I plug it into my computer and open the DCIM I find the folder full of files I can't delete with the file name 'μ' There's probably 500 of them in there now and it's slowed my SD card access to a crawl. I can delete them using gallery but they come back. My regular photos have also started showing up with different file names with μ somewhere in the file name
Anyone else have this problem? Know of a fix?

I would download a virus protection from the play store. This sounds bad to me.

Welcome to the forum sledhead5000!
Can you provide us with a screenshot of one of the files in question?
I don't think there's anything nefarious going on here, but something more along the lines of a cache file or something similar. If you could provide a screenshot that may help us to better determine what we're working with here.
Are you using the stock gallery? Are the pictures in question ones you've taken yourself or pictures you've downloaded from the internet?
Hang in there and we'll try and get you fixed up.
