Lost my Contact notes on Droid RAZR MAXX after OS update

I installed the newest Android OS update (System 6.12.181.xt912 android version 2.3.6) and although my contacts are there the notes within the contacts are gone. Verizon says that backup assistant doesn't back up contact notes and that I would have to find a third party to do that. Any suggestions? I am not having any luck on my own.

Hello and welcome!

Did you happen to have your contacts backed with your google.com account? And have you logged onto to google.com via your web browser to see if that info is in there?
