Launchers and performance!

Okay so imve gone through countless launchers (even bought spb shell) and have finally decided to stick with the lightweight zeam launcher. Even using it I see that it is eating battery. do launchers run over the stock ui or does it run by itself? I don't want two ui's to be running at the same time. Are launchers natural for the phone, or is it just a program that makes the phone bloated ram wise?

This is an excellent question. Does anyone have an answer for this? I am wondering the same myself. When running a different launcher, does it just run over the top of the stock UI, and take up even more of the phone's resources?
