Has kitkat been rooted?

Really just interested in getting WiFi tethering working without paying vzw extra

The only way to have root on KitKat at the moment is to root on 4.2.2, follow some specific procedures before accepting the OTA, and then a few more after. If you already have 4.4, at the moment there is no way to root the phone (unless you have a developer edition and have unlocked the bootloader.)
