Keyboard backlight doesn't work at all

A few months ago I noticed that my keyboard completely backlight stopped working. The lights on the front screen still work. I'm not sure if something came loose inside the device or what. It's not intermittent; the keyboard backlight doesn't work under any circumstances. My phone isn't under warranty any more so I'm open to any DIY fixes. My brother's Droid 3 recently completely stopped working, so I can probably use his for parts if needed. I'm very satisfied with my Droid 3 outside of this issue and I'm not due for an upgrade until March. Any ideas or suggestions?

Edit: This appears to be a hardware issue, rather than a software issue. My Droid 3 is rooted and I gave Keyboard Backlight Controller a try without any success.
