Is this a new

I wondered if this is something that slipped on with an app update feature, or something that has been around, and I never stumbled across it.

If I Swype from the bottom right our bottom left corner, I drag up a lot of shortcuts and things like recently used things.
What is that and can it be enabled/disabled?

Never seen it before, doesn't do this on mine. I suspect an app you have installed, possibly a loader, antivirus or other helper app.

I found it. DU SPEED BOOSTER APP.
I noticed a little kind of hidden watermark thing when I messed with the top of the screen. DU was faintly seen. Went into settings found DU SWYPE. Just sneaky that they don't show an obvious link to the causative app or a provision to easily disable.
