Is there a way to read the texts on my Thunderbolt with my laptop via the usb?

My touchscreen is malfunctioning and can't be unlocked. Verizon will replace the phone, but my texts will be lost. They are not stored on the memory card. When I plug the cell into my laptop, it is recognized as a hard drive. Is there a way to access my texts with my computer to read (and ideally save) them?

If you don't have access to the touchscreen, then you would need to access the root system files. There's a good chance it would be do-able inside ADB, but I think you would need a DEV to walk you through it. I'd post this on the XDA-Developers website and see what you get.
