im not rooted and my old battery is fine but i was hoping to be able to use my other battery when im not home and my phone dies

Ok so it's just your new battery may be defective.
Does it have same rating as old?
You could charge battery and leave charging for a hour or so after it says charged
Then use phone till it shuts off

You could try app battery left
