how much user data do i lose if i restore moto droid 1 back to factory settings? would that mean id have to go to the verizon store to get it turned back on in my account?

All your user data is erased. Except what's on your sdcard. No you would not have to go back to VZW. Just log back into your google account and you're good to go.
