Illumination notification

I apologize if this has already been asked but I did a search on "notification" and came up with way too many threads to sift through which had nothing to do with my question.

Anyway, was wondering if there's a setting that will illuminate the screen when I get a notification such as an email or text message besides just the audible alert tone that I receive? Often I'm out in loud environments and don't hear the tone but would see an illumination if it happened.

Any info would be much appreciated!
