how to update super user without bricking your phone

I have to upgrade super user but tried and the little Android laid down dead and three update didn't work. What do I do to upgrade this. Thanks

i tried using recovery install and it failed, so i thought it would brick my phone, but then i tried regular install hoping it wouldn't mess up and it didn't so i figured it out. Thanks
