This phone synced my entire gmail contacts into my phone, which I don't want and there are tons of duplicates.

The verizon store told me there is a way to stop the syncing from gmail/google to my phone. Does anyone remember how to do this?
I didn't find it in contact settings.

Also, what does it mean when a tiny light flashes from the bottom of the phone?

You can merge contacts
People app
Tap contact
Tap picture (or generic face if they don't have a pic)
Tap 3 dots in upper right corner
Tap edit
Tap 3 dots again
Tap join
Tap contact to merge with

Also, in the phone app, it should only display the contacts with phone numbers. All the other contacts will still be available for composing emails. If you turn off sync and you lose/break your phone, you'll lose any contacts you had in your phone... and pics, bookmarks, calendar, docs, music, books, etc... Unless of course you use vzw's backup assistant. It covers a few if those things... but just about everyone here has frozen/blocked/removed that app because a) Google's sync is more thorough and b) its from Verizon and we didn't even want them to put their software on our phone to begin with.

You may want to create another Gmail account specifically for your phone. Contacts sync is vital to backing up your contacts instantly.
