How to alter notifications?

Hi, I'm relatively new to the whole concept of smartphones in general but I'm so far so good with my new Fascinate. However, there is one issue that I'm having and I'm sure there are more to come and that's I'm getting overlapping notifications with the Handcent SMS app and the pre-loaded Messaging App. How can I make the messaging app stop sending me notifications?

Go to the messaging app, hit the menu button, go to settings and uncheck the box for notifications. You'll probably have to scroll down some to see it.
