How Do I Speed Up My WiFi?

I have a Linksys n router and EarthLink broadband that averages 18-22Mbps down and 10Mbps up on both my laptop and gaming rig.

No matter what I do the fastest I can get my Fascinate to run is about 1.6-1.8Mbps down and, get this, about 3Mbps upload.

What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't I be really smokin' on both up and down on WiFi?

There's probably not much you can do -- Wifi is one of those thing's thats very much conditional on the environment. Make sure you're broadcasting your SSID.

I understand environmental variables. But I am 5 feet from the router. and other devices on the same router are smoking it in dl speed.

If you are standing right next to an "n" router on a 50 Gbps fiber backbone and you are pinging a local gigabit server, what would be the Fascinate's top speed, and what would be its bottleneck?

Here is an average run from my laptop:

Here's the thing... your router and your laptop\desktop is a giant thing that will horde data and bandwidth from your router and give you good stats because the hardware is capable, yay...

Your phone that you hold in your hand is getting tiny stats because it is a phone... a tiny thing that you are holding in your hand... unless it has sprout the beanstalk to better megs or gigs per second... that's you answer.

That makes no sense at all.

What you are saying is that I should expect slow DL speeds because my phone is small. Seriously?

That's daft. Next.

Hm, good point, I'll go somewhere else now :)

Clearly your phone should out-do my\your laptop :P

Clearly your results resemble this :)

Actually he has a point. The hardware on a computer is much faster than your phone. Even if you have a processor at 1GHz it isnt going to change much. There is a little more than being two feet from a router involved with it.

Only thing I can tell you to get better performance is make your own 802.11 protocol haha but good luck with that.

Plus there are a lot of variables that play into the whole networking scheme of things.

There may also be some apps that allow for faster FTP or have some kind of QoS, but I dont you see much really.

Point is, it has been reported in several reviews of the Galaxy S/Fascinate that people have gotten DL speeds in excess of 10-12Mbps on Wifi. It's size has nothing to do at all with it's DL speed ability.

I have shown and proven that I am able to get over 22Mbps DL at my house through my wireless router. So why can't I get my Fascinate any faster than 1.6Mbps???

Well then start at the beginning.

Are you on stock OS?

What security are you using on your wireless router?

Have you tried resetting your router?

Those are just a few to start with. See where you get from there

1. Yes, 2.1update1, un-rooted

2. WPA2

3. Multiple times, both the wifi router and the cable modem

Take my word, I have been working at this for a couple weeks now. And I would classify myself as above the average user. Computer/network troubleshooting has been in my blood for a while, since at least about 2000 when I began building my own gaming rigs, networks, and such.

Video of a Galaxy S rocking 23+Mbps Wifi.

So it's possible.
