Jacob Ajit a 17 year old Thomas Jefferson High School student from Faifax Virginia was messing around with a T-Mobile prepaid phone one bored Friday evening. He quickly discovered that he could gain access to unlimited 4G data on the network for free. A T-Mobile prepaid sim card allows you to update your account without having to go into the store to buy more data or minutes. Even if you run out the pre-paid sim gives you limited access to data so that you can purchase more data.
Ajit found that he could access the T-mobile member portal even though his pre-paid period had ended. Just for the heck of it he loaded speedtest.net and found that it still worked. This is likely a white listed site meant to promote LTE speeds even on devices that aren't active. He then realized that data hosted to test the internet speeds contained /speedtest in their URL. Knowing this he then setup a remote server containing /speedtest in the web adress, which he then ran all of his browsing through the server. This enabled free unlimited 4g LTE surfing.
