In regards to flashing custom kernels:
-Always flash the ROM of your choice first, THEN the kernel:
- Make sure they are compatible first; must be built from the same base
- Always read the OP for special instructions; and if there are restrictions on flashing
- Always wipe cache and dalvik cache when flashing a kernel in custom recovery (not all kernels are flashed in custom recovery)
When in doubt! Ask questions! And always read the OP of the kernel you are flashing!
