Hi! I have some interesting ideas...

I think these are, for the most part, good ideas. The non-continuous lock pattern and What Time Is It? wallpaper are the most interesting to me. Really, the only two I personally wouldn't want are the up-and-down wallpaper and the Welcome Home screen, and that's just my personal preference, I think other people might like them.

I also appreciate Matth3w's concern about system resources and I don't know how "costly" it would be in those terms to implement the ideas. But given that some of them are already available as third-party add-ons, and some have been requested previously, I think they are worth considering.

Keep 'em coming! :)

Each by themselves, negligible. But take a few "ideas" for this release, a few ideas for that release, and the next thing you know, the OS is twice or 150% the size on an already small internal memory.

Not to mention lag issues, etc.

Home replacement apps are almost ALWAYS just a little slower than the stock home, even overclocked. Some of that is because it is an ENTIRE new app, and some of it is because of the additional features of said app.

Some good ideas..but..a very big but: Why are you so dead set for your ideas to be native to the OS. One of the true beauties of this OS is NOT being forced to deal with bloat.
Keep it as simple as possible, let the developers and hackers run free. Let them ADD, or else they will be wasting their time and talent REMOVING all the excess.

if you coming from another device it is going to take time to learn and appreciate the droid. Coming from iphone i had a list of things i wanted to see, now the list, (except for a more organized market) is gone because I have a different minset now i know what the droid can do.

I agree with matth3w and billyidle. Not every random feature that some person wants needs to be native to the OS. Everyone has his/her own "interesting ideas". If all those were thrown in then we'd be complaining about the bloat. Consider that for some their interesting idea is a sleek, fast efficient OS. There's a fine line to be drawn.

The OS should be mostly a platform but it does need some degree of features and eye candy. I'm just not convinced, IMHO, that anything proposed is a universal must-have which is where I think the line should be drawn. In my experience so far Android seems to be quite extensible through apps and for me that's a major plus. That said, YMMV, of course.

Thank you all for your comments.

Some of you (about 2 so far) seem reluctant to have the native system be a better user experience, have more features, etc... even if it is just eye candy.

Here is the problem with that. I would of agreed with you, if we were just entering the smartphone age. The problem is, technology is always advancing. People want better, faster, and warmer user experiences with any technology. "Smartphone" wouldn't be called a "smart"phone if they just offered basic around the block features, and nodded to other third-party applications enhancing the device itself because the simplicity of it allow room for expansion.

I'm a Apple fan, I've been a Apple fan for a while, also a Microsoft fan, and now I'm a Android/Google fan. But one thing I do notice shifting through the fan bases. Apple, are very openminded when it comes to their OSs, and iPhone. They are constantly thinking "what can we do, to make the user experience, better, faster, warmer, etc... right OUT THE BOX" and they strive for that. Steve is feeling threatened by Google, and he is about to unleash a plethora of new ideas, that could have kept other companies ahead of the game, but were too close-minded. Think about this. Apple releases a feature that plays a song you love at the home screen, even if you don't like the idea, follow me for a second... Apple creates this on the next iPhone, patents it, and then the other companies realize "woah, some people really enjoy this simple, yet aesthetic feature, why didn't we think of that?". Multi-touch, was something that was NOT NEEDED, and could of potentially bloated a systems resources, but that didn't stop Apple from striving for it. Now look, everyone wants to use multi-touch on a grander spectrum.

Now that the Google vs Apple war is very imminent and prominent, we are going to see both parties step up their games to make technology better.

Imagine if Google and Apple CEOs, developers, teams, etc... set down and said "lets make the phone as simple as possible, so third-party applications can make the experience better"... we, on a technology forefront, won't advance anywhere.

Why? Because many at this forum, have hacked their phones and are enjoying extra rooted features, etc... Please understand that the average user, will not do this, 99.6% of the time. Apple and Google does not want you to root their phones. Apple and Google does not want you to HAVE to download third-party application so enhance their phone (unless its officially through their channel), truthfully speaking. It may sound jealous, stupid, and you will think "well why do they have a market?"... well follow me...

We started out with bare feet, which evolved to horses, that evolved to cars, etc... Imagine if we just stayed at barefoot transportation thinking "ok, now lets find some ointments, clothing, etc... that will make our feet run faster and be more efficient, without advancing". If Apple and Microsoft said "ahhh shoot, who needs GUI? Lets just keep the command based navigations, keep them with this interface, keep it simple". If things like this happened, etc... we won't be very advanced at anything.

Pioneering, advancing, and perfecting technology is all about breaking the boundaries, and creating new experiences. Its kind of a conundrum... wanting a "Smartphone" to be... simple... well we know the advanced calculus, trigonometry, boolean, logic, and number theory math systems aren't for the "basic, simple minded"... its more advanced.

What we will see? We are going to see Apple, Google, etc... eventually adding these features down the road. I bet soooooo much money on it. And there will be a lot more features that you will not agree on, but will be there as options. Some people like 2 bedroom houses, some like 6 bedroom houses. The difference? Option.

You want to know one easy and simple testament? To keep it smaller in thought, not such on a grander scale of things... the gallery in 2.1 Android OS update, the GUI is fully enhanced, the experience is a lot better, warmer, etc... and just having this enhancement... "OUT THE BOX" will make many, many, many Droid users love their phone more. I can attest to that.

Point is, sometimes, you elitist (not pointing anyone out in this thread, just generalizing) that hack/mod/crack devices have to come to the realization, that essentially (which by HISTORY of hacks, moderations, and cracks come from) is because something is lacking, and you want a better experience... you have to stop and realize that at some point. The companies that will succeed in shaping the future of technology... will study the usage of these exploitations... and say... "these users deserve to have this experience... as soon as they open the box". And you don't have to worry about things lagging down the system, know why? Because it will always happen once in a while, even if you have a clean slated machine with anything. Technology, on a tangible level, is moving on, and are able to holster the enhanced user experience ideas.

And if you don't believe me now! Come back to this thread in 10 years, and just see how these smartphones blow peoples minds because these companies have a simple motto... "Think Out of The Box, Enjoy Out of The Box"...

I'm pretty sure the pre pixi lets you scroll up and down and side to side on the homescreen. Its confusing as all can be. I'll stick to side to side.

I've not been able to find this feature. Would you mind finding it, or post a picture? Reminder again... does the native system perform this?

Also, as you said you will stick to side to side, that is why it would be an option. I ask, have you ever used Apple Expose? Having more screens up and down wouldn't be confusing I don't think... since well... its kind of a basic direction lol. But seriously, if the multi-directional screen was implemented, I would suggest a compass type icon on the bottom showing you where you are... but I think they already have something similar for 2.1. So navigation won't be confusing.

Specially for the very organized ones like me. One panel for music, on for quick dials, one for apps, one for information (news), etc... We will see...

In the end it really doesn't matter what you think, because no one is going to implement this based on your thread. Sorry

like I said earlier, because you looking at the phone through the apple iphone eyes you are noe appreciating the phone. I did the same thing here. Here are your choices:
A) get a few apps from the market to customize your phone and continue to learn about the phone from forums like this

B) complain take it back and go iphone

I think if you give it time you will love the phone and you will finally understand what the people on this thread is saying. This phone is a phone that YOU decide what to do with it, not apple, or windows. And that what makes this phone unique. You came from a phone like the iphone where it was all done for you so you probably see this blank phone and is disappointed. But you will realize that be putting things you want and not what some one else wants makes your phone more unique.

Give it some time, I was on the verge of taking my droid back, and im glad the verizon rep stopped me. I love this phone and what you can do with it..... to help me ease through the process I put the apps I used the most on my iphone on my phone (nfl superfan and pandora).

In the end it really doesn't matter what you think, because no one is going to implement this based on your thread. Sorry

Usually, I like to tear people like you apart. Not on this forum, not on any forum. I don't have the energy for it these days, I've grown far to mature. But you sir, should really learn how to be more classy with your deliverance of disapproval. You are seeming to be nothing short of the tail of a donkey. Just a tip of advice for your future endeavors, since your personality since our first encounter oozes with ressentiment. Good day.

You're assuming. They are incorrect. I'm looking at this phone, as a techy, that chose this phone over everything else at the moment for what the phone was, a great smartphone. I never owned a iPhone. Please note, giving suggestions, and ideas, doesn't equate to not appreciating something.

Calm down every one has an opinion do not let this get crazy or a mod will close this thread.

All im saying is give it some time, you are in your 30 day still. If after day 30 you still feel the same way and another phone offers a better feature switch. Im not saying that is what you want to do or not. Also I have notice emailing motorla or google does help. I emailed them about some things a couple of times and hey it came through. But some of the things you are asking for should be developed as an app/widget by a developer so that it can be an option to have that feature or not.
