Help with preventing Droid from answering calls while in my pocket

Can someone help? I have already searched the forums for this problem. I have an HTC - Droid Eris. I have set the "pattern" to lock the screen when the screen goes blank, however, when someone calls me while my phone is in my pocket, it still will answer the phone without me knowing I am connected with anyone. Can someone help steer me to a good solution???
