You'll get varied answers on that. I have used Handcent almost since day one and I got my phone in November of 2010. You just need to remember to turn notifications off on the stock one.

I would also say handcent is great, tho you may find picture messaging to be a pain. I have always had issues sending pic messages, I know its a common issue. I rarely send pic messages, but still go back to stock because you will have a lot less "not sent" notifications.

That would be my one complaint. I almost always send pictures from the stock text messaging app but lately I have started using handcent again with better results.
Handcent certainly has some annoying things... like if you have it pop up automatically and you go to do a quick swype reply but what just a little too long it will disappear in the middle of trying to swype a reply.
You also can't look up stored email addresses with it, which is annoying.
I love handcent. The separate icons, tones, and background pics per contact is awesome.
I have no trouble sending pics with it, though I did have issues sending video.
