Got upgrade avail, scared of being shoved into tiered data. Still using OG Droid?!

Hai guys, lil drunk here lol so bear with me.

I have a question.

I'm still running on a OG-D (see sig) and it's starting to just run like crap. Too lazy to reflash it and I don't want to lose anything on it.

With the rumors of VZW shoving people into tiered status, I found a loophole on it (where you just stick with your unlimited 4G LTE data plan and then buy phones at cost from then on out).

However, I do not have a LTE plan currently. Just my unlimited data. I verified with a rep an hour ago that I can still be grandfathered in if I purchased a new phone, so yay, I keep Unlimited LTE.

So far seems that i have 2 options: FREE Bionic, or $170 for a Razr Maxx.

Rep said that I shouldn't have to worry about it yet, so maybe I have a chance at a lower priced Razr Maxx? Or should I just get the Bionic for free and buy a $50 laptop dock being thrown out by retail stores? Afterall, I plan on getting the Razr HD, so why spend money on a R-Maxx???

Or they have the D4 or the Razr for $70...

Ideas?

Why the Nexus? That thing is soooo old...

True dat home boy lol. U had the right idea with the bionic. I'm in the same boat as you but I love my current phone and I'm holding out in case there is ever a serious threat of losing my grandfathered unlimited which at the point I'd use my upgrade and sign a new 2 year contract since by then there will be much better phones and deals. Right now there's nothing with better hardware than my current phone so I'll hold my upgrade until it's time to make sure to re-up my grandfather contract due to a serious threat of not being able to keep it with a new contact

From what the situation is when I talked to the rep, if you upgrade after the whole tiered thing drops, you will not be grandfathered in. Once the tiered plans drop, the only way to maintain your unlimited data is buying a phone outright.

I might just get the Bionic tomorrow...

Between those two, definitely the RAZR Maxx.

But I agree with the guy above that said the Galaxy Nexus is better than either. 720p display, vanilla android, NFC.

I'd stay away from the Droid4 unless you absolutely must have a keyboard. IMO the Rezound is the best successor to the original Droid. SD expansion, removable battery, true 720p display, 16 gigs internal storage, one of the best cameras available, awesome radio, and HTC allows you to unlock it unlike Moto phones. Also, I have been running the leaked ICS and man, is it awesome. Fast and smooth and pretty.

The Bionic isnt a bad phone, but the software on it just seems archaic stock. Its 2.3.4 and looked just like my X with stock GB. The Razr has 2.3.6 and it looks a lot better and newer with more features. Those come into play if you are going to stay stock. I also don't like the Bionic's screen compared to the Razr. Only thing it does better is viewing in sunlight. I'm not saying its a bad phone, but there are some fan boys here that are blind to see that other phones are better.

Not to mention there is more Razr development if you are into that.
Don't forget that Verizon has a stupid $30 upgrade fee too.

Its not a bad phone like I said. Currently it is supposed to get ICS in Q3, with the D4, but the Razr will get it at the end of Q2...

razr maxx if you want a better radio and battery life and d not care about roms.

Galaxy nexus if thr primary goal is to have an unlocked bootloader so you can run roms.

Get the Razr Maxx. It has a huge battery and better radios. Plus the Bionic is old news. Plus when the HD comes out you can sell the Maxx and still make more money on it than you spent.

I'd go with the Nexus unless you want to be locked down and dont care about rooting. Then I'd go with the razr .

Okay... I really do like modding, makes life easier and things faster to use. However, I live in an area where the best radio would be nice, i'm always on the go and love battery life. I tend to be the go all out or nothing, so I will probably use 4G whenever I can (It is still not available in my area...).

So so far the choice is Maxx or Nexus...

You could get an extended battery for the nexus and carry an extra battery just in case, and as far as modding and dev community there isn't any better. I usually get about 7 hrs with at least an hr and a half of screen on time with factory battery on 4g all day i live in detroit and we have strong 4g and with the 4.0.4 update the signal has gotten better, though i never had signal issues.
