It's better management in Android 10 ... Small things .. you will a few more on Android 11 .. Google made some subtle changes across the platform

Reading it now I see why google home button long press doesn't launch goigle assistant from nova as it is a swipe command not supported in nova yet
The switch to gesture navigation means that you can no longer activate the Google Assistant via the home button. You can however activate the assistant via an inward swipe from the lower corners of your screen on Android 10.
This activation method isn’t obvious though, so Google has added visual cues in the form of Google Assistant “handles” in the corners (seen above). Hopefully this subtle addition eases confusion about Assistant’s activation in Android 10.

I'm using Samsung gwstures not the Android as you stated not ready yet on 3rd party..Gboard and Swiftkey are my go to keyboards but I know you can enable one handed mode on the Samsung one hit the keyboard settings ...
Samsung put the fix in for Android ten on note 20 so swipe works but I don't like its version of swipe so using buttons but that makes it so there is no ho key for google assistant

I'm using my gestures and also when I use home takes me to Google Assistant
Something is definitely throwing it off..when I try buttons it works as well ...
Yah holding down home does not work even with nova launcher off hmmm
