Google Voice - what is it & what does it do for me?

And of course, people can still call my regular cell number, right? OK, I think I'm gonna do the google number. Wish me luck!

Well crap - just when I thought I had it all figured out! Hmpf!

The calls I receive are generally from clients, not other businesses. So this could be problematic. But without the google number I don't get the free SMS, right?

And most of my clients do call/text me from their cell phones, so they wouldn't be paying long distance anyway, just minutes... right? Wow, I'm so confused! LOL

And if I get the Google number do I have the option of using/NOT using it when I place calls? How does that work?

Man... sorry to be so needy!

On your phone you have an option not to use it, to use it, or a prompt to ask you which number you want to use. You're completely covered.

Somewhere out there is a widget that you can place on your homescreen that lets you toggle your outgoing call number between your VZW number and your GV number. I don't know what the widget was called, though.

Absolutely they can call on your regular number. And good luck, just go over your set up page carefully when you set it up on line. You'll get a link to do that with.

Thanks, everyone - you've been very helpful! And thanks to mrnelson86 for looking out for us. :)

I've got much to learn about using this phone to it's full potential. I'm so glad I found this forum (even though much of what I read on here seems Greek LOL). Thanks again!

So from reading the thread i'm coming to the conclusion that getting a google number would be better then using your verizon number, if you have the right plan for it. I heard someone say to put your google number on you 10 family numbers to get unlimited minutes with it. Is this true? And if yes, how? I just seems to good to be true to just get free minutes. I don't have a GV account yet but am hoping to get one soon! Feel free to send me an invite if you have to to spare! :)

By downloading the google voice APP there is a widget included which is a one-touch toggle for 1. "all calls use gvoice" 2. "only international calls use gvoice" 3. "no calls use gvoice" and 4. "ask every time I make a call"

I'm stumped now..how do i know if I have this or not? I have 2 widgets on my desktop. One is a little bubble that says 'talk'. When I click on it up pops this: Impending invite... admin.androidslide. When I click on it it gives me an email option. I have another widget that has the bubble, says 'voice' and it welcomes me to Google voice, and says I have set up my cell phone to use Google for my voicemail and has a celll number on it. This is my first smartphone and I appologize but it's all so new to me. Can anyone explain how this works and if is infact an invite for either texting and/or voicemail?

If you have it, you will have filled out the information at voice.google.com

If you want to be sure, go to that website and put your gmail login. If it comes up you have goog voice. If not, then you don't.

I think this is a stupid question but I want to make sure I am correct. In order to use the google voice functions like visual voice mail the person calling has to dial your google number right? In other words I have to tell everyone that I have a new number and give them my google number. Is that the only way?

This is a good question that has been asked twice in this thread with no answer yet... just giving a gentle push...Can anyone help us out?

Yes that is correct. If you chose a new number from google they have to use that number to use google voice features.

Wow... now I have to rethink, again!

What about those who are using the "visual" voice mail feature with their verizon number? How does that work??

Yes that is correct. If you chose a new number from google they have to use that number to use google voice features.
