Give My Number?

I just noticed this app on my phone today. Apparently it's suppose to allow your Droid to make calls with Google Voice and keep Verizon from charging your phone. Which is cool, but I have no idea where it came from.

Is this something that came with 2.1? I've never seen it discussed, I'm kind of surprised this got by me.

It's not on my 2.1 Droid unless I'm missing it. Where did you see it? In the app drawer or somewhere else?

I'm not sure how, why, or when, but this app seems to have popped up on my Droid.

I thought maybe I had an early senior moment and perhaps downloaded it from the market, but it's not in the market.

So the only thing I can conclude is it had to come with 2.1.

Does anybody know what this app does? Does it somehow allow you to make calls through Google Voice without dialing your number?

Just stock 2.1. Tried to google the answer and I couldn't come up with anything.

That's just it. I can't figure out how to use it. It's just kind of like there on my home screen. And it has some very vague instructions: Note: Due to a proximity sensing bug on some phone, you may need to wait until the numbers are dialed (5-6 seconds before you put the phone to your hea. If you don't do this some required dial tones may not be sent.

That's it. Nothing that says it's running in the background or anything like that. So I have no idea what this is.

Yeah, this is real strange. Not in the market. I think I'd remember if I went through the trouble of downloading it as an .apk file. Wife doesn't have it on her stock Droid. Where'd this thing come from, what is it? I don't want to get rid of it in case it's useful.

But you're right it's gvmynumber. Has to do with Google Voice. I just checked, it's still not in the Market. Got a clue as to what it is?

Well, it's not on the market and doesn't look like it ever will be, but I think it may be useful. I rarely use GV for outgoing calls, but get a fair amount of incoming. To make a free outgoing call, you have to use a trick to call your google voice number + the other persons number, and GV calls you back to connect the call. I think this app automates that. Will have to play with it later.
