Google announced it was working on an Android platform to challenge Apple’s CarPlay called Android Auto back at Google I/O. Today it is releasing the APIs to the public so developers can start working on extending their apps.

The APIs consist of two main focuses, those being audible notifications through a car’s speaker system and the access of music files through a directory. Android Auto currently supports only supports audio and messaging apps, but more app categories will be supported in the future.

I considered waiting until next year to buy a car for Android Auto. It wasn't a deal breaker since I get all of the functionality I require with car I purchased in September.

Google Maps would be sweet though. That Entune navigation system is pretty poor.
