I can speak a destination and it works fine. When I type a destination it brings up an X on the right, instead of a magnifying glass, so I can't get directions. A little type writer appears on the top, It says select input method(touch input) when i go to configure input, it will not let me highlight touch input, only google voice typing. I hope this makes sense, any help would be appreciated.

Yeah.... I have noticed this too, I just press the Return key on the keyboard and it searches normally (ie. 172 Oak St<RETURN>). Not sure when this changed, if it was with ICS or a Maps update, but I can confirm this is happening and I have found no "fix" for it.
